KNOXVILLE, Iowa -- A driver died of injuries suffered while taking part in a United States Auto Club Midget race in Knoxville on Friday.
Chad McDaniel, 34, of Concordia, Kan., died of head and neck injuries after being airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

McDaniel was leading the SMRS Great Plains Midget Series standings at the time of his death. He had scored five top-10 finishes in six races this season.
“On behalf on the entire USAC Racing community, we are deeply saddened and carry heavy hearts today with the passing of Chad McDaniel,” said Kevin Miller, chief executive officer of USAC Racing. “Our sport has lost a passionate racer today, and our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to his family during these most difficult times.”
McDaniel is survived by his wife, Trish, and his children, Trevor and Taylor.
